A local or national holiday, mela, or eid. Next to religious beliefs and folklore, an important source is agricultural. Food is undoubtedly an important resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time. The celebrations give you a sense of belonging for religious, social, or physical groups, causing group cohesiveness. They may provide entertainment, which was particularly important to local communities ahead of the advent of mass-produced entertainment. Festivals that give attention to social or ethnic subjects also strive to inform community users with their traditions; the involvement of elders showing stories and experience provides a means for accord, unison, union, concord, unanimity among families.

In Antique Greece and Rome, celebrations including the Saturnalia were tightly associated with social enterprise and political processes as well as religion. In the present day, festivals may be joined by strangers such as tourists, who are interested in some of the more eccentric or historical ones.
